As the senior product designer on two of Google Cloud's most critical virtual machine migration projects, my role was crucial in ensuring that the products were user-friendly, visually appealing, and met the project's objectives.

I collaborated closely with engineering and product leaders to define the project's requirements and objectives, and I led the effort to design the user experience and user interface of Migrate to containers and Migrate to Compute Engine.

I also conducted multiple design sprints to define the primary objectives of the product, timelines, and the architecture of both products. We also conducted extensive research on user needs, preferences, and behavior. By gathering data on users, we were able to create user personas, user journeys, identify their needs and goals, and design a product that met their needs.

Based on our research, I created multiple user flows that were presented to the team, like VM analysis, Source Integrations, Replications, tests, and final migrations. I also developed the visual design of the applications in collaboration with Material Design and prototypes that were tested with users with UX engineers.

During the testing phase, we conducted multiple usability studies using those prototypes to gather feedback on their experiences with the product. Using this feedback, I iterated on the design, making improvements to the flows. We conducted A/B testing to determine which design elements were most effective, and we used this data to refine the product.

Throughout the development process, I worked closely with engineering and product management teams to ensure that the final product met the needs of users and exceeded their expectations. A good example of this was that we discovered during the research that users were used to migrating virtual machines from the code console, rather than a user interface like GCP. To address this, I designed a wizard that required only five steps, making it simple for users to migrate virtual machines from one source to another or move them to Kubernetes, improving their performance in a straightforward manner. As a result, our product was widely adopted by users who found it to be more intuitive and user-friendly, leading to a successful product launch.

In summary, my work as a product designer at Google Cloud involved collaborating with VP stakeholders and senior leadership, conducting user research, designing the architecture of the product, interface and components definition. We were able to create a product that met user’s needs and exceeded expectations. The result was a successful product that as widely adopted by users, demonstrating the importance of user-centered design in creating successful products.
